20 Days of Friendship

For the last eight years, Dr. Rob Avery, owner of For the Love of Pets Veterinary Hospital, has served on the board of The Friendship Club. In addition to his duties as a board member, he has welcomed the girls into his office to learn more about veterinary science and volunteered as a Senior Project mentor. He said he is still amazed by the stories about the strength of the girls to survive and thrive under “conditions the rest of us would throw up our hands at.” Dr. Avery believes that with the help and support of the community, it doesn’t have to be that way for these girls.

Tell us about yourself.

I have lived in Grass Valley for the last 15 years, I have two children that are just out of high school. My wife, Inger, and I are involved in local animal welfare groups including wildlife rescue, and local musical organizations. We are happiest giving back to the community we love.

What brought you to the Friendship Club?

I had been serving on the Grass Valley school district Board of Trustees and was nearing the end of the term when I was invited to the Friendship 100 fundraiser. I was hooked!

What has the Friendship Club meant to you?

I am consistently impressed with The Friendship Club’s ability to deliver. We identify girls in need and truly help them to make their lives better. As a board member, I am responsible for ensuring the efficient use of funds and the financial stability of the organization. Of course, we always need more funds, but we are able to successfully carry out our mission.

Why should others support the Friendship Club?

The Friendship Club is an excellent way to positively and directly affect our community. Many of us have daughters that often have the advantages of a stable family that is able to guide them, to support them and to help them make wise decisions in life. The Friendship Club allows us to extend our positive family environments to others not so fortunate.
