Things to Consider When Breeding For or Buying a Puppy
Most puppies come from "just once" breeders. Anybody can breed dogs, but managing the creation of healthy puppies that meet breed standards requires a great deal of knowledge and oftentimes a great deal of experience with your preferred breed. The days of knowing that you have purchased a well bred dog just because it is AKC registered are long, long gone.
Through the cooperation of reputable breeders and veterinarians, we have developed a handout to educate our clients about how to find a reputable breeder rather than a "just once" breeder or worse yet, a backyard breeder. Please read it.

Orthopedic Foundation for Animals
The OFA databases are core to the organization’s objective of establishing control programs to lower the incidence of inherited disease. Responsible breeders have an inherent responsibility to breed healthy dogs. The OFA databases serve all breeds of dogs and cats, and provide breeders a means to respond to the challenge of improving the genetic health of their breed through better breeding practices. The testing methodology and the criteria for evaluating the test results for each database were independently established by veterinary scientists from their respective specialty areas, and the standards used are generally accepted throughout the world. The OFA databases are listed to the left of this page and are expanded as more tests become available.

Gentle Leader
Millions of dog owners today enjoy the benefits of stress-free walks thanks to the Gentle Leader Headcollar. Designed so that owners can communicate with their pet in a way they instinctively understand, the Gentle Leader painlessly and effectively removes the dog’s natural tendency to pull by placing gentle pressure on calming points and eliminating uncomfortable pressure on the throat. In addition to reducing a dog’s desire to pull away, the Gentle Leader is also a very effective tool in combating lunging, jumping, excessive barking and helping to calm an aggressive and/or anxious animal.
FTLOP carries Gentle Leaders in the retail section of our lobby.

We are a completely volunteer run organization whose purpose is to keep puppies out of overcrowded shelters where they are at risk for disease and euthanasia. FTLOP works with this organization through a local representative.
NorCal Boxer Rescue
NorCal Boxer Rescue was born in June of 1998 when Amy Northrup-Adcock, our Founder and President, recognized the need for a reputable Boxer rescue organization in Northern California. In the months that followed, she worked to build the organization by developing relationships with California shelters and establishing a network of foster homes and volunteers. Within the first year of operation, NCBR had obtained its federal 501(c)(3) Non-Profit status and had rescued and re-homed 268 Boxers!
November of 2001, Amy relocated to Richardson, Texas and began a second division of NCBR that serves the Dallas and Fort Worth metroplex. Each division of NCBR has its own set of volunteers and distinct geographic coverage; however, both divisions fall under the umbrella of NorCal Boxer Rescue, Inc. and operate according to a standard set of policies and procedures.
Since NCBR's inception, we have had the great privilege of saving thousands of Boxer lives and providing just as many families with a loving and loyal companion!

When moving with pets, it’s worth taking the time to make sure you aren’t breaking the law. Regulations vary greatly by state; West Virginia has none, while several states in the Northeast have many restrictions. Most states require some form of a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection for at least some animals. The CVI helps ensure that only healthy animals are transported across state lines. Failing to meet these requirements could result in a fine or other penalties. GoodCall® researchers have simplified the process with a map, which offers a listing of the laws by state for moving with dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, ferrets, and horses. The data comes from information from the American Veterinary Medical Association.
ResQ Microchips

Whether your veterinarian microchipped your pet or you rescued a pet (bless your heart!) from a shelter that microchips its pets, here is where you complete the most important part of the pet recovery process - registering your pet's microchip ID. It's free and it takes less than five minutes to enter your pet's name and microchip number along with your personal information. This ensures that PetLink can quickly reunite you and your pet should it become lost. -

Raisers are responsible for teaching the puppies good house manners and basic obedience, and most importantly, socializing them to the world. No prior experience is necessary to become a puppy raiser; we will help you through the process every step of the way. It is a rewarding, emotional experience, and a commitment for which Guide Dogs is extremely grateful. As a puppy raiser, not only will you discover the delight of a four-footed, wet-nosed companion, you will join a community of like-minded people all working toward improving the quality of life for people who are blind.
